Two Years as a Dead Man on the Cold War's Frontline

My first duty assignment was with the 3rd Infantry Division (Mechanized), also known as the Marne Division and the Rock of the Marne. I was assigned to HQ & A Company, 3rd Forward Support Battalion stationed in Aschaffenburg-am-Main, Bavaria. My unit was redesignated 26th Forward Support Battalion in the middle of my tour. Though I was trained as a warehouseman, I served as unit armorer for 21 of my 24 months in country.
