Do you like my site?: yes
Will you visit again?: maybe
Will you recommend site to others?: doubtful but perhaps
Do you think I'm insane?: slightly

Comments:
how can you call yourself an "atheist" and yet have a page and a section devoted to athena? athena held the own as sacred before dominator culture raped her religious practice as i am researching for a paper... it seems that people who reject popular religion tend to call hemselves atheist -- when they just don't believe in the religions... but it is precisely their rejection of the Goddess that leaves them so less than whole and unsatisfying. nice page.

Webmaster's Response:
Actually, the page in question is devoted to Heterodoxos, my owl, who serves as my official web site mascot. Also, whatever devotion I have to Athena is solely as a symbol and a metaphor for what I consider to be the highest of all human attributes. I don't believe Athena actually exists, and I certainly don't worship her as a divinity.

As a strong atheist, absent evidence to the contrary, I not only do not believe in "God" but deny the existence of "God." Further understand that I use the term "God" as a metaphor which refers not only to the Christian concept but to all deities, supernatural beings, paranormal entities, etc. This is in keeping with my primary metaphysical position as a hard materialist under which I assert the following: that only matter exists; that matter has always existed and will always exist as it can be neither created nor destroyed; and that everything that exists is either made of matter or is a manifestation of matter.

Yes, there are those who casually use "atheist" to refer to what is merely their loss of faith in the religion in which they were reared. Also, there is a history of members of the dominant religious ethos referring to the members of minority religions as "atheists"; for instance, the ancient Romans did so with the early Christians who refused to worship the Roman gods.

Finally, I'm rather amused by your variation on the evangelical Christian theme of the "God-shaped hole." Hmm, a "Goddess-shaped hole"!?! Sounds like gender feminist claptrap all the same.

Your site is hilarious. I am one of the many conservatives who you say don't quite understand the coupling of conservative values and atheism. But I think you have a great sense of humor which makes this site very amusing.

Have you done nothing better with your life in the past 15 years than this?
Did you ever even graduate from UNCG?

Webmaster's Response:
Hmm, apparently someone is doing a little egosurfing! Or simply trying to locate an old college friend. Either way, I trust you enjoyed the blast from the past of my 1993 UNCG Carolinian columns "Ban against homosexuals must remain" and "Traditional values come out on campus"; some of my best, most effective work from that time.

Matt Wallace's The Compleat Heretic is an expression of self-affirmation and self-actualization. My other sites, Atheist and Agnostic Pro-Life League and East Forsyth Senior High School Class of 1979, are expressions of my highest ideals and my devotion to others. Also, they all arose during one of the darkest periods of my life, thus are products of my will to overcome myself. The alternative to creating my sites wasn't doing something "better," but rather aimlessly wandering in the darkness of the abyss. Though they all need to be redesigned and updated, as well as worked to their full potential, they are rightly sources of great personal pride.

As for UNCG, I'm on track to complete my BS in Finance, Insurance, and Real Estate this summer with 175 semester hours. I'm nothing if not persistent! After that, I think I'll go back and finish the BA in Philosophy I abandoned when I dropped out of UNC-G in 1985 to do a four-year enlistment in the U.S. Army. Sheez, I'm even seriously considering double majoring in English! Intellectual discipline and strength combined with a formal study of literature and writing would be a most formidable combination. Anyway, "Professional Student" is a legitimate career, isn't it.

All the same, I rather suspect that you really give a damn how I've lived my life...

Salutations, Matt. Just stoppin' in to give you your periodic dose of aggravation. There was a story in the Florida Times-Union recently I thought might interest you. It seems someone donned a tiger suit (no shit. I couldn't make this up) and climbed the St. Augustine lighthouse to protest kiddie porn. Noble enough, yet just a little bent. Can we expect to see you in a tiger suit climbing lighthouses soon? ---John

Webmaster's Response:
Hmm, I suppose this activist was a real tiger on the issue!? I don't think I'll be replicating this stunt anytime soon ... not too many lighthouses here in the Piedmont Triad! Sorry I haven't added any significant content lately.
