Yes, I suppose so. I don't know if I'll have the patience. He is commonly supposed to be foolish. Did you fight with others? Can you recognize that woman? Where did you learn to speak English? Being criticized is awful! Shut up!

Hmm, I appear to have struck a nerve, if only I knew which one.

Webmaster's Response:
In the e-mail above, Mr. Reinhardt, an Internet troll of some infamy, is answering a charge that wasn't made in my response to his Guestbook entry of 12 May 2008. In that response, I merely stated that I found no evidence that I had received his claimed e-mails and admitted the possibility that I mistakenly had disposed of them without opening them; even as I contradicted his claim, I never accused him of lying. Though unstated at the time, another possibility is that Mr. Reinhardt, busy little troll that he is, simply had me confused with another victim of his trollistry.
An example of Mr. Reinhardt's troll activity can be found in a discussion of enhanced interrogation and the Global War on Terror at http://commonsenseatheism.com/?p=6470. While I generally agree with the position taken by Mr. Reinhardt in this discussion, his argument is overwhelmed by his brusque and obnoxious technique. Also, one of the participants reposted the "world wide warning" referenced in my earlier response and located originally at http://reinhardt.worldwidewarning.net.
And lest anyone think I'm being unfair to Mr. Reinhardt by posting his e-mail as a Guestbook entry, please consider that I posted the e-mail only after giving the matter due consideration for over two months during which I determined that posting the e-mail in my Guestbook was appropriate as Mr. Reinhardt was commenting on his earlier Guestbook entry. Furthermore, Mr. Reinhardt used the subject line "The Compleat Heretic's Contact Page," appeared to have copied and pasted my address from that page, and even included that page as an inline attachment, thus one can reasonably assume that he knew the contents of that page. My Contact Page begins with my site Privacy Policy which states in part, "Submission of any online form on this site or sending an e-mail message to me creates the possibility of my posting that information to this site in some manner." Therefore, Mr. Reinhardt consented to this posting.

Hi heretic -
"and with mighty wings outspread
Dove-like sat'st brooding on the vast Abyss
And mad’st it pregnant"
I'm not sure how a brooding dove (presumably a pregnant female) can make anything pregnant. But then, in his similes Milton often failed to fully align the analogue with its tenor.
All the best
yadswyver
Webmaster's Response:
The quote is from a poet's traditional invocation of the muse at the beginning of an epic poem; in this case, the poet is John Milton, the muse is the Holy Spirit, and the poem is Paradise Lost. I used the full invocation as my jumping off point in my critical essay, "A Devil of a Problem: Satan as Hero in Paradise Lost":
And chiefly Thou O Spirit, that dost prefer
Before all Temples th’ upright heart and pure,
Instruct me, for Thou know’st; Thou from the first
Wast present, and with mighty wings outspread
Dove-like sat'st brooding on the vast Abyss
And mad’st it pregnant: What in me is dark
Illumine, what is low raise and support;
That to the highth of this great Argument
I may assert Eternal Providence,
And justify the ways of God to men.
— Paradise Lost, Book I, 17-26
Accordingly, the Dove in question is not a bird of either gender, gravid or not, but rather is the Holy Spirit who is symbolized in art and literature as a white dove. Even so, Milton makes full use of the bird metaphor. "Brooding" means both "covering young with the wings" and "sitting on or incubating eggs or young." Furthermore, "the vast Abyss" is the bird's clutch of eggs, the overwhelming nothing from which the Holy Ghost will hatch everything that will exist after the Creation. Milton also plays on human emotional and mental states in which "brooding" is "sitting quietly and thoughtfully" or, more negatively, "being in a state of depression." As an old atheist who readily sees God for the anthropomorphism that He inarguably is, I'm rather partial to the notion of a yet-to-be-Creator obsessed with and depressed over being the only thing in existence. Regardless of one's reading of the text, the Dove is shown at the moment of the Creation when He alone existed "brooding" over the dark Nothingness until He "mad’st it pregnant," that is, made it teem with all the manifestations of the Creator's Will:
In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.
And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.
And God said, Let there be light: and there was light.
— Genesis 1:1-3 (King James Version)
As a poet trapped in the dark abyss of his blindness, Milton composed Paradise Lost in his mind and dictated his creation to transcribers; like the Creator, he depended on the creative power inherent in the spoken word. He echoes the opening verses of Genesis with his poignant entreaty to his Muse: "What in me is dark / Illumine, what is low raise and support." He draws upon the Hebrew creation myths with his invocation and creates a connection between his epic poem and the larger Christian epic, The Bible, which allows him to tap its power. As a result, Milton not only calls upon the Holy Spirit to aid him in his creative task but assumes His power as God the Creator.
