How did you find me?: yahoo-"conservative atheist yahoo groups"
Do you like my site?: yes
Will you visit again?: yes
Will you recommend site to others?: yes
Do you think I'm insane?: Too soon to know; too mad to care.
Comments:
I just started reading your site, and intent to finish reading it. But before I do I have to ask: did you ever come up with any ideas as to how you ended up this way? Because, if you did, they might be helpful to me in figuring out how the hell I wound up this way, as well as in figuring out what to do now that I'm here. And yes, I'm starting to think there are quite a few of us conservative atheists out here. I'm going to join that group too. That's actually what I was looking for when I found you.
Webmaster's Response:
Hmm, I really need to complete the political portion of my autobiography, Becoming a Republican; or, How I Learned to Stop Worrying About the Religious Right and Find a Political Home. I suspect that much of my conservatism and traditionalism may have always been there, my atheism notwithstanding. I was always very patriotic, pro-military, anti-Communist, pro-capitalist, anti-Welfare State, and very much ruggedly individualistic. Though I was a cultural "progressive" intellectually (for example, "gay rights"), I was a moral traditionalist functionally as I deliberately didn't smoke, drink, do drugs, or screw around. I was basically a good Southern Democrat and voted that way though I never affiliated with the Democratic Party. Looking back, I recognize that I "became" a conservative when I was in the Army. Though I joke about the Army "doing something to me" to change me into the opposite of what I had been, the change wasn't a result of anything the Army did to me. Properly experienced, active military service strips down one to one's core, to the essential elements of one's being. Furthermore, it reveals to one those things in life which truly matter. Even so I didn't begin to identify myself as a conservative and a traditionalist until I'd returned to college. I was an opinions columnist with the student paper and was referred to uncomplimentarily as "that conservative guy who was in the Army." I didn't accept the description at first, but I ultimately realized that it was accurate, and I quite gleefully incorporated it into my self-identity!

How did you find me?: Google search for 'conservative atheist'
Do you like my site?: Very much
Will you visit again?: Absolutely
Will you recommend site to others?: You bet
Do you think I'm insane?: Definitely not
Comments:
I have felt very lonely since my de-conversion from christianity to atheism. Not because I have let God go, I feel much freer now. But, I couldn't understand why not believing in God meant I had to denounce my conservative values and embrace left wing liberal dogma. I'm very happy to see I'm not the only Rational rationalist in the world. I like your idea of a web home for the more conservative atheists. I would enjoy discussing my beliefs without being branded a right wing war monger. Sign me up.
Webmaster's Response:
Hmm, the third post by a "Conservative Atheist" in the past week. Apparently there are more of us than I ever suspected; maybe even enough to form the critical mass necessary to justify some sort of web presence specifically for the "Radical Irreligious Right." In the meantime, perhaps we can discuss such, or anything else for that matter, on Conservative Atheism, a Yahoo! Group "[f]or atheists who understand the socioeconomic justification for conservatism, or anyone who wants to learn or argue"; it's not mine, but it is readily available.

Do you like my site?: Yes.
Will you visit again?: Uh huh.
Will you recommend site to others?: Certainly.
Do you think I'm insane?: If you are, I am, so probably.
Comments:
Just when I thought me and my husband were the only 2 Conservative Atheists in existence, I found this site and a few others all in one day. It was a good day. You've said pretty much everything that he and I discuss amongst ourselves... I have to be provoked to go off on tangents, or else I'd have a site of my own. Maybe one day....
Webmaster's Response:
Hmm, the second post by a "Conservative Atheist" in three days. Perhaps I should act on my long-held notion of starting a web site specifically for the "Radical Irreligious Right" or at least some sort of directory page on this site.

I find it very refreshing to hear from another avowed atheist who supports the rights of the unborn, upholds the Second Amendment of the Constitution, and shows respect for his president. It is nice to know that I am not the only conservative unbeliever.
Webmaster's Response:
While I fully respect and support President George W. Bush, I never had any such feelings for the immediate past occupant of the office.

Late at night, desperately searching the web for like-minded people (dunno why it took me so long - probably the "backlash" of the Bush victory), I came apon this site. Conservative atheists, it seems are few and far between. After reading some of your site I don't agree with you 100% (no one should, right? - mainly because I support abortion). I will keep searching but will bookmark your page!

Of course, this all-too-young Ivy Leaguer's claim to have "surfed through [my site]" is simply deceptive. As is the pattern for spamming liberal ninnies, he immediately made his way to my Guestbook Central page where he accessed my Guestbook Form so he could leave the link to his truly pathetic attempt at a blog which is mostly photos of drunken partying with "girls gone wild" with a "liberal" portion of stereotypical Bush-hating, etc. thrown in. Oh, dude, I like realize how misguided my politics and all are 'cause yer arguments are like so totally convincing!

I do find your self-description more than interesting, I disagree with most if not all of your opinions. I am happy that anyone can still say what they think, although that part is at risk because the religious right is in power right now, so let's hope everyone (including you) can still make their opinions known to others.
Webmaster's Response:
Hmm, I certainly would like to know why your teacher sent you to my site. I suppose it was Civics-related as you directly entered the site on my 18 January 1998 letter-to-the-editor, "Froma Harrop insulted memory of Sonny Bono," and that page has been accessed through such searches several times in the past few days.
While evangelical Protestant Christians are an important component in the Republican Party's current majority coalition, I readily dispute the claims that "the religious right is in power right now" and, even if such were the case, that they represent a threat to individual liberty. The power of religious conservatives is limited to the ability to influence policy as they aren't numerous enough to exert control; such is the nature of coalitions. The majority of the authors of American disestablishmentarianism were themselves Protestant Christians. The lack of a "Church of America" has allowed a religious free market in which religious expression flourishes, much to the consternation of my fellow atheists. While the "radical religious right" is actively skirmishing on the fringes, I am confident that religious conservatives would never overturn the very principle that secures the religious liberty of us all.
Finally, if you had explored my Publications, not to mention the bulk of my site, beyond
"Rooming with gays changed soldier's mind," "Transcript of official statement of 7 August 1987," and
"Bill Clinton Can Never Be Trusted," perhaps you would have found something with which you agree.

I am envious of your developed web creation skills. I wish I could learn. Your evolution into conservatism was interesting. I'm not religious, but I think hitting on 8 cyclinders about being an atheist was a bit much. I couldn't care less if you are, however, reading your opening statements, it is a real turnoff and I think people might not enjoy the rest of it. What do you care if people know about that one peice of you. Ralphie (Zaidaspeak)
Webmaster's Response:
As I always describe it, Matt Wallace's The Compleat Heretic is "the personal web site of an economic and social conservative, Republican, Teamsters union member, moral traditionalist, pro-life, U.S. Army veteran, NRA Benefactor Life Member, Secular Humanist atheist." I created my web site to inform others about myself: who I am, what I do, what I think, etc. Withholding any major component of my personality would be dishonest, not only with others, but with myself as well. I am well aware that some people will focus on a lone aspect of my identity and react negatively; that's their loss, not mine. I'm here for those people who have the intellectual curiosity to explore a unique synthesis of views that most people consider incompatible. I'm here for those people interested in getting to know an individual human being who refuses to be limited to the narrow confines of the petty vision of others. And that's why I "care if people know about that one [piece]," and every piece, of me.
