Good Morning! Thanks for your site! I can't begin to tell you how very nice it is to be here! I had never heard of this unusual combination of views that seem opposed to each other before so I just had to check it out. Only on the Web! Thanks again for posting this site. Vitally important last and final point: Stay online forever! You can't begin to know how important you are to many of us out here in NetLand!

How did you find me?: Searching for Atheist who are prolife online
Do you like my site?: yes
Will you visit again?: yes
Will you recommend site to others?: yes

Comments:
I am not an atheist but I vehemently oppose abortion. I am thrilled to see someone who is not religious express the same views b/c morals do not just apply to Christians. Make sense? Anyhow, I would love it if you start a "cause" or "group" on Facebook. I have many atheist friends that I would love to invite to join if you decide to start one. For some reason, many of them feel that if you are an Atheist, you cannot be prolife. Absurd. It is simple anatomy. Thanks!

Webmaster's Response:
Hmm, yet another reminder that I need to update the Atheist and Agnostic Pro-Life League web site...

And we have an Atheist and Agnostic Pro-Life League Facebook group.

Comments:
You have a very comforting web site. I just wanted to ask you how sure or not sure are you that God exists? And by the way, I am well aware you are anti-abortion, but are you also against profanity, because you don't seem to put it on your site. Maybe you never use profanity in your own personal life either. Hope to hear back from you.

Webmaster's Response:
I adamantly affirm the following two statements: "I do not believe in God." and "I deny the existence of God."; this combination makes me a strong atheist. Additionally, I use "God" as a metaphor which refers not only to the Judeo-Christian concept but to all deities, supernatural beings, paranormal entities, etc. Absent convincing evidence to the contrary, I have no reason to alter this fundamental metaphysical position.

As for profanity, I will use it for effect on occasion, though I generally avoid it in common parlance. I am working class and an old Army sergeant, after all. I can think of only two uses on this site, but both are direct quotes.

Matt,

I find your story very intriguing and similar to my own. I was a practicing Catholic until I a few years ago. No dramatic event, just the realization that none of it made sense and seemed made up so I walked away at 40 years old.

I don't know if I am an agnostic or an atheist, but I can tell you this. I believe in a free market economy more than I believe in God is the best way to describe my mindset.

I have a problem though. I am an employee of the Boy Scouts of America. I am contractually obligated to be an active member of a church. Early in my career, this was not a problem, but now I am over 15 years vested with no other career experience. I am very good at what I do, but I feel like I am living a lie. I have a family to support so walking away would financially devastate us.

I would welcome any thoughts you may have.

Webmaster's Response:
Yes, I completely understand your dilemma. The Boy Scouts' page for their
Religious Emblems Programs reiterates the relevant point of the Scout Law: "A Scout is reverent. He is reverent toward God. He is faithful in his religious duties and respects the convictions of others in matters of custom and religion." Just prior to becoming an atheist, I quit the Boy Scouts after having been a member for two years precisely because my growing lack of faith made it impossible for me to fulfill this requirement; please refer to Seeing the Light; or, How I Became a Godless Heathen.

Though there has been some conflict between the Boy Scouts and the Unitarian Universalists over the requirements for the religious emblems program, I think you should be able to fulfill your contractual obligation to the BSA through membership in a Unitarian Universalist church. Your religious views seem very nebulous, and, as the UUs have no fixed religious dogma, you would be able to explore your beliefs without the pressure of having to conform to the flockmind. Though it may be a cultural stretch, you could consider Buddhism as it is an inherently atheistic religion.

I strongly urge you to rethink your position on rape, and to explain to me why incest justifies killing, and is so often grouped with rape, as if you cannot support abortion for rape but not incest.

I stand by my pro-life/anti-abortion position as I have articulated on this site; please refer to

You seem to be forgetting the '70s also gave us the microprocessor (vital to all modern technology as we know it).

Not to mention video games, IVF, the location of DNA reproduction sites, the discovery that Red Dye No. 2 was carcinogenic, the most recent manned moon mission, the feminist movement, Star Wars, the =E2=98=AE sign, the "Ms." title, Earth Day, the 26th amendment, numerous space missions, the end of the Vietnam War, Apple Computers, Western Sahara, the first public computer BBS, Star Trek: The Motion Picture, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, and the first Gay Pride march, and an L.A. gay rights bill, and kat swift.

But, disregarding all the good things the '70s gave us, yes, the 1970s had a net negative impact.

Webmaster's Response:
Actually, something like half of your list could be added to my list on
Irritations: The 'Seventies.

I had just enlisted in the Navy Reserve earlier that month. I was heading to Chicago for boot camp on July 20,1969. During the flight the speaker was turned on and the walk on the moon was broadcast LIVE! I will never forget it! It just seems like yesterday!

Webmaster's Response:
I'm glad my column, First moon landing in 1969 marked an entire generation, helped you remember one of the truly transcendent moments of the human experience.
